We've already been doing something similar with our icons sets for ffox, we had to create a dark/light version for the transparency issues on chrome. One thing to note, the urlbar on windows behaves differently than on Mac. This will make getting transparency on windows a bit more difficult. It worked fine with solid colors, but as soon as you introduce transparency, you'll see the flaw in the way the xul/css was layed out. Hey sean.
